Emirates Post releases stamps on Al Gaffal 60ft Traditional Dhow Sailing Race
Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and UAE Minister of Finance, was presented with a set of framed stamps by Mr. Abdullah Al Ashram, CEO of Emirates Post, during a press conference, which was attended by senior officials of Emirates Post and representatives of local and Arab media.
Addressing the press conference on board the ship ‘Fahidi’, Mr. Al Ashram said the release of the stamps reflects Emirates Post’s keenness to support different sporting events held in the country. “These Al Gaffal stamps are very special to us because through them we can spread awareness about this heritage water sport of the United Arab Emirates,” Al Ashram added. The annual Al Gaffal 60ft Traditional Dhow Sailing Race is organized under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and Minister of Finance, by Dubai International Marine Club to mark the end of the water sports season. This race has been held every year since 1991.
The Al Gaffal or Sir Bu Na’air race represents an embodiment of the past and history, and revival of old memories. This race commemorates the festival which was celebrated by the forefathers on their long journey after several months of pearl diving at sea.
The race features nearly 100 dhows travelling to a distance of about 51 nautical miles. It requires huge preparations and logistical support such as keeping the area safe and protect the participants from surrounding dangers, especially from giant barges traversing the Gulf. The area takes place over a large area and the captain of each ship is free to choose his own route to the finish line.
